Club Review – The Powerhouse
On The Move – The Powerhouse moves from the
‘Gallery’ in Leeds to the ‘Dancemill’ in Mirfield every Friday night
– 9pm – 2am.
Maybe you’ve already heard about this, either through Dream FM,
friends or straight from the Powerhouse organisers. The move is due
to a take over of the Gallery by another club. So without wasting
time, Steve Luigi, a resident DJ and organiser of the Powerhouse
night, decided to look for another venue.
He came up tops, as you will agree if you’ve ever been to the
Dancemill in Mirfield. So they didn’t lose too many of their regular
Leeds crew, who maybe didn’t have transport. Steve came up with the
idea of laying on a coach. This leaves Leeds at Call Lane near the
Corn Exchange at 8.30pm SHARP! and arrives in Mirfield at 9pm ready
for opening. The coach is only £3 return and with a £7 entrance fee
in to the club, it’s still cheap.
I decided to pop down to the opening night of their new venue on 5th
August and have a look round. I was greeted by Steve Luigi, who then
took me inside and showed me round. The security seemed friendly
enough as we went through the entrance and straight in to the chill
out room. Peter-de-Santos was on the decks here spinning mellow
house tunes. There were only a handful of people in here at the
moment, but it was only early. There were plenty of very comfortably
looking settees and the low lighting gave it a relaxed feel, unlike
some chill out rooms that have a milk crate for a seat and lighting
that would more suit Wembley.
Steve then took me upstairs to the main room and left me to get on
with some picture taking. In here it’s just one big room with a bar
running along one side and a tiered platform along the opposite
side. To the front was a small stage with two large backdrops, hung
at either side. At the back was another raised area, which also had
some stairs leading to the DJ Box.
There were only about 200 people in here, which, in a room of that
size, doesn’t look that many. But it was only 10pm, so there was
plenty of time for more punters.
Dean White was just finishing his set, which was mainly vocal house.
Next up was DJ Carl (Dream FM). His set is varied, from house to
hardcore, and some bouncy techno tunes. Along with MC ‘Fox’ the
whole place was livening up.
After chatting to a few of the regular Powerhouse Crew, the
impression I got was that they miss their old venue, but still liked
the new one, which probably is to be expected after 4 years at the
‘Gallery’. But, it’s time to move and, as the song by
‘Ultrasonic’goes, “Nothing is Forever”.
It was now 12.30am and about another 100 people had come in. Steve
Luigi was next up and he always gets the crowd jumping with his mix
of happy house. Unfortunately, I could only stay until 1am, as my
‘mixing’ talents were in demand at a private party! (Which I was
late for!!), but that’s another story.
So if you’re looking for a night out, with a mixture of tunes, then
get yourself down there. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
