Europhia – Phuture Sound of Underground
Part IV. Europhia II at the Dorian Gray
Airport, Frankfurt, Germany. Sunday 2nd October
1994.
At last! The eagerly awaited sequel arrived five
months after the launch of Europhia 1 which
proved to be an enormous success. It was also
the first major German event to include a
breakbeat/jungle room, which had a line up, you
guessed it, of UK’s DJ’s which included the
likes of Carl Cox, C-Smooth, Byron Gee, Micky
Finn, DJ Dextrous from Surburban Base Records,
LTJ Bukem, Peshay, Randall – Jungle to the max
as you can see, which didn’t go down quite as
well as planned.
I touched down in Frankfurt at 11.45am,
shattered after doing the Pleasure Dome in
Skegness and driving directly to Birmingham
International Airport. The event here actually
started at 12 midday, so I had arrived in plenty
of time to check around the airport. Now the
Dorian Gray is situated in the basement of
Frankfurts airport, so it was a sight seeing
thousands of partygoers converging on the place.
This event, like the first, sold out inside two
weeks of going on sale. The venue boasts four
rooms, all of which were open for the event –
there was a house room, techno room, jungle and
chill out. You may wonder why a jungle room
appears again after the previous review, but the
fact is there are people in the scene who like
jungle, so keeps everybody happy!
I eventually got into the venue at about 12.40pm
after struggling through the masses waiting to
get in, most of them without tickets. Inside the
place was already three quarters full, thanks to
the security doing an excellent job. Nice one
lads!
I went directly to the hardcore jungle room
which was rammed, nice to see this time. There
was a very European flavour in the DJ line up at
this event coming from Switzerland, Italy and
England. The English jocks on duty at this event
were Carl Cox, Hype, Slipmatt, Sy, Ellis Dee, C.
Smooth, Dougal and Fabio. Unfortunately
Slipmatt, Ellis Dee and Sy all failed to show.
C. Smooth opened proceedings with a sorted set
to kick off this excellent event, Dougal
followed and slammed it Dougal style, then came
Germany’s No 1 junglist bwad boy baseface Sascha,
with some nice melodic tunes backed by some meat
and potato, otherwise known as drum and bass!
To fill in for the three English DJ’s who didn’t
arrive was DJ Pussylover (normally associated
with techno) who apparently loves jungle and has
a nice selection of it too! He actually played a
six hour set, so respect to you!!! After came
the man like Fabio tearing up proceedings with
the beautiful style of his. Then came the one
and only Carl Cox, who did a four hour set of
breakbeat and jungle. He kicked it ruff with
some happy piano and I was tempted to skank the
DAT and make fat dollars… (Only joking Carl!!!).
MC’s were myself and Stixman from Birmingham
City, a name to look out for in ’95.
Moving on I checked out the acid room which was
going for it to the max with DJ’s Kid Paul, DJ
Hell, Woody, A-Damski and guests. The chill out
room was wicked with fully fitted video screens
playing virtual reality films and sci-fi movies
such as Bladerunner etc.
The techno room was graced by Five of the worlds
top techno connoisseurs – Carl Cox, Mark Spoon,
Pascal F.E.O.S., Laurent Garnier and Sven Vath –
it was a historic occasion to see them all
together.
A ‘bang on time’ was had by everyone who
attended and also those who played at the event.
Once again the Euphoria crew smashed the place
with only their second event.
